When drug discounts don’t help patients, something’s gone wrong

Oregonians deserve a healthcare system that puts patients first, not one that rewards profit-hungry corporations. Unfortunately, state lawmakers are considering a policy that does just the opposite.

Expanding the 340B Drug Pricing Program might sound like a win for vulnerable communities on paper. It was created in the early 1990s to help low-income and uninsured patients access medications at a lower cost. As a pediatric nurse practitioner, I saw firsthand how vital that mission can be.

But after decades of expansion without oversight, the program is now being manipulated by powerful healthcare systems that have learned how to turn patient aid into corporate revenue.
