National Taxpayers Union (NTU) on Thursday named Representative Greg Steube (R-FL) Taxpayer Defender of the Month for his work protecting taxpayers from being forced to financially rescue state and local governments.
Rep. Steube introduced the Government Bailout Prevention Act, which establishes safeguards against federal funds being used to bail out state and local governments in financial distress.
The bill would prohibit the use of federal funds, including funds from the Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury, to purchase or guarantee the obligations of state and local governments that have defaulted, filed for bankruptcy, or face imminent insolvency.
“We are proud to select Representative Steube as our Taxpayer Defender of the Month. Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to bail out fiscally irresponsible jurisdictions that spend beyond their means,” NTU Executive Vice President Brandon Arnold said.

The Taxpayer Defender award honors leaders who go above and beyond to protect taxpayers through transparency, fiscal discipline, and principled leadership.
“I’m honored to receive NTU’s Taxpayer Defender Award. If states and local governments get themselves into a financial mess, taxpayers in other parts of the country shouldn’t be stuck paying for it,” Rep. Steube said.
Each month, NTU selects one leader who demonstrates a clear, consistent commitment to limiting taxes, spending, and regulation at every level of government. Previous award winners include House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Congressman Steube was also recognized as a “Taxpayer’s Friend” for an “A” rating in the latest edition of National Taxpayers Union annual scorecard, NTU Rates Congress.
