Should Americans pay twice the world price for sugar? Today, NTU said they should not in a letter to the U.S. Senate in support of Sen. Lugar’s “Free Sugar Act of 2011”. In order to open the playing field for sugar, a field currently rigged in favor of products like high fructose corn syrup. It’s about much more than increasing the variety of sweeteners available, as the current tax and regulation scheme costs jobs by unduly burdening sugar based products. NTU also urged the Senate to pass S. 575 to hold off on implementing Dodd-Frank rules that could lead to an increase in debit card costs for consumers. The legislation would create the opportunity for deliberation on various rules that the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill aims to implement that could have dire consequences for the economy.
Addtionally, NTU sent letters to in favor of terminating the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP), which has utterly failed to live up to its $75 billion cost, and a number of amendments on behalf of taxpayers to the “SBIR/STTR Reauthorization Act of 2011”.
