The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that former Nevada SenatorJohn Ensign still qualifies for a full pension (worth $27,000), even though he had resigned during a Senate ethicsinvestigation. NTU Executive Vice President Pete Sepp reminds taxpayers, "Eventhough the amount may appear to be relatively small, for a little over 10 yearsof service it is not a bad return at all." Ensign’s pension also isprotected from cost-of-living increases, compared to only 1 in 10 private plansoffering those same conditions. Congressional pension plans, as NTU noted, payretired lawmakers about two or three times more than workers with similar salariesin the private sector.
