Did you miss this week's issue of NTUF's Taxpayer's Tab? If so, here's a quick recap.
Congressman Jared Polis (CO-2) and Senator Joe Lieberman (CT) have each introduced legislation to fund the President's education reform effort know as Race to the Top. The program offers grants to schools to foster "a national competition which will highlight and replicate effective education reform strategies" from across the country. Originally funded with stimulus funds, H.R. 1532 and S. 844 would authorize funding for fiscal year 2012. NTUF estimates that the legislation, if adopted, would cost $1.35 billion in its first year.
Other highlights from this week include: S. 475, which is Senator Tom Coburn's (OK) legislation to eliminate inefficient or duplicative federal programs. H.R. 358 and S. 877, both known as the Protect Life Act, is the Most Friended bill of the week. And, Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-4) has introduced H.R. 1776, Older Driver and Pedestrian Safety and Roadway Enhancement Act of 2011.
