We have long been supporters of Senators Sessions and McCaskill's efforts to implement federal spending caps. Their amendment, which has been introduced alongside different pieces of legislation several times, would establish a responsible cap on spending growth of roughly 2% per year from 2011-2014 that would require a 67-vote point of order to waive. The cap provides the potential to save taxpayers approximately $6.5 billion.
While Senators Sessions and McCaskill have garnered much support for their provision, the vote always seems to come up short. The Hill, however, ran an article today that said Senator McCaskill claims to now be just one vote short of victory. All 41 Republicans support the spending cap (as do 17 Democrats, maybe 18 if The Hill rings true), so the Senator is making it clear she's working hard to whip that final Democratic vote.
This is a great measure that will offer some element of protection from a budget growing out of control. Call your Senators at 202-224-3121 and tell them to support the Sessions-McCaskill spending cap. Here is our most recent Vote Alert on the amendment.
