Ohio Energy Bill Is A Corporate Bailout and A Loss for Taxpayers

Legislators in Ohio have agreed to pass energy legislation that amounts to little more than a large corporate handout for struggling energy companies. NTU advocated against the passage of the legislation and is distraught that both Republicans and Democrats agreed on this crony capitalist legislation.

NTU Vice President of State Affairs Leah Vukmir issued the following statement:

It is disappointing to see Ohio lawmakers cave to special interests with the passage of Ohio House Bill 6 today. This marks an abrupt turn from pursuing the state’s energy goals and highlights the fact that lawmakers have opted to pass legislation bailing out non-competitive nuclear plants at the expense of ratepayers statewide.

The bill, which will impose an annual expense of $150 million on energy consumers, is an infringement on Ohio’s competitive energy market that has grown on the strength of the state’s natural gas production. Good public policy should not forgive corporate missteps with Ohioans’ hard-earned money.
