The new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) takes effect July 1. "Free trade agreements like the USMCA are important to taxpayers because they reduce or eliminate taxes on trade," said Bryan Riley, Director of the National Taxpayers Union's Free Trade Initiative.
NTU has supported and will continue to support trade agreements that make progress toward zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, and zero subsidies. “Free trade agreements make America stronger,” Riley said. “They boost our economy, provide new markets for U.S. exporters, and give us access to the best goods and services from around the world.”
Support for free trade from economists is nearly universal. Two years ago, NTU released a letter from more than 1,100 economists calling for more free trade and less protectionism.
“USMCA, like NAFTA before it, facilitates mutually beneficial trade between buyers and sellers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico,” Riley said. Today’s uncertain economic environment demonstrates the importance of reducing barriers to trade and securing stable trading relationships with our allies.
