Literacy Education & Health Bureaucrats in NTUF's Taxpayer's Tab

Did you miss this week's issue of NTUF's Taxpayer's Tab?  If so, here's a quick recap.

Washington Senator Patty Murray has introduced S. 929, Literacy Education for All, Results for the Nation (LEARN) Act because "[c]hildren in every state deserve to have access to high quality literacy education that will give them the reading and writing skills they need to succeed in school, in their future careers, and in life."  Murray's bill would create new literacy initiatives and strengthen childhood reading efforts.  The bill would provide grants to state education agencies, early learning entities, and K-12 school districts.  With $11.75 billion in new spending over five years, or $2.35 billion per year, S. 929 is this week's "Most Expensive Bill of the Week."

Other highlights from The Tab include Senator John Cornyn's (TX) bill S. 668, Health Care Bureaucrats Elimination Act.  The legislation would eliminate the Independent Payment Advisory Board, which was part of the health care reform bill.  The bill has 30 cosponsors and is the "Most Friended" bill of the week.  The "Least Expensive Bill of the Week" was sponsored by Senator Mark Pryor (AR).  The "Wildcard" for the week was introduced by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin.  S. 749 would impose a tax on payments to certain individuals who hold government contracts.  The intention is to use those revenues to publicly fund Senate election campaigns.
