Indiana's safety-net reforms matter to taxpayers

A new Indiana bill collides head-on with a hard truth politicians prefer to dodge: Taxpayers don’t just feel frustration with government, they see their dollars wasted when basic rules stop being enforced.

Most Hoosiers aren’t poring over food assistance eligibility charts or Medicaid health care waivers at night. They’re assuming the state is doing its job by verifying who qualifies, applying the rules consistently, and guarding taxpayer dollars with the same care families use to balance their own budgets.

Sen. Chris Garten’s Senate Bill 1 doesn’t tinker at the margins. It forces Indiana to answer a blunt, uncomfortable question: Are our safety-net programs administered with discipline and respect, or have they drifted into a system where good intentions excuse sloppy oversight and public confidence becomes collateral damage?
