Taxing iTunes and downloads for iPods? This lingering threat to consumers and businesses could be countered by a recently introduced House bill. The Digital Goods and Services Tax Fairness Act of 2011 (S. 971 and H.R. 1860), which proposes that digital online goods are not to be taxed more than their in-store counterparts, has received support from the National Taxpayers Union and other groups aiming to protect perhaps the most dynamic part of the American economy.
In light of an initiative being overridden by their lawmakers, a coalition of Missouri citizens are gathering support for a constitutional amendment known as the "Voter Protection Act." The proposed amendment aims to protect the voters' voice by requiring a 3/4 majority vote in the House and the Senate to override a referendum approved by the voters. It will change the current law in Missouri, where a simple majority in both houses is all it takes to squash the will of the people.
