Taxpayers Congratulate Sen. Johnson as He Prepares to Take Over Budget Committee

As U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) prepares to take the gavel of the Senate Budget Committee, National Taxpayers Union (NTU) on Thursday congratulated the incoming chair for his resolute defense of taxpayers and insistence on spending offsets in the brewing reconciliation bill.

Senator Johnson is an acclaimed fiscal hawk NTU recently recognized as a Taxpayer Defender of the Month for his leadership to end government shutdowns and fight earmarks in appropriations bills.

“Taxpayers are desperate for relief from the inflation, high interest rates, and depressed private sector investment caused by our nation’s $39 trillion and counting debt. Senator Johnson is one of the few stalwarts who is willing to lead with the necessary decisions to deliver that relief,” NTU President Pete Sepp said.

Senator Johnson has consistently received high marks in the NTU Rates Congress annual report, with eight “A” grades that earned him Taxpayer Friend awards. The scorecard includes every single vote that affects taxes, spending, debt, and major regulations.

“Senator Johnson is the leader taxpayers need to end congressional budget dysfunction and curb spending that only ever goes up,” NTU Executive Vice President Brandon Arnold said. “We look forward to continuing to work with him and the entire Senate Budget Committee on a reconciliation package that contains the spending offsets taxpayers need.”

On Thursday, NTU sent a detailed blueprint to the House Budget Committee advising appropriators how to offset spending increases, including guidance for how to work with the Senate through the process.

National Taxpayers Union is the only free-market organization for taxpayers that unites effective advocacy with useful research about how to limit taxes, spending, and regulation at every level and branch of government—state, federal, administrative, and judicial.
