Sen. Kennedy Named Taxpayer Defender of the Month by National Taxpayers Union

National Taxpayers Union (NTU) on Wednesday named Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) Taxpayer Defender of the Month for his work on tax reform, fraud prevention, and preventing government shutdowns.

Sen. Kennedy’s impassioned defense of the Working Families Tax Cuts on the floor of the Senate on Tax Day clearly articulated how the American people are benefiting from the certainty that comes with making historic tax cuts permanent.

“We passed the One Big Beautiful Bill . . . and most of the provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill, which are going to help with the cost of living, are just now taking effect. People are already seeing tax refunds bigger than they have ever seen, and that is going to help,” Senator Kennedy said in the speech on the Senate floor.

He also introduced a bill to prohibit the Export-Import Bank of the United States from providing financing to companies and individuals with seriously delinquent tax debt. With scandals involving fraudulent government payments and the widespread misuse of taxpayer dollars making headlines, bills like this help shore up public trust in government.

Sen. Kennedy previously introduced a bill that would withhold pay for senators in the event of a government shutdown. The American people don’t expect to receive paychecks if they fail to do their jobs and this legislation ensures members of Congress remain accountable to taxpayers.

“In an era of soaring deficits and governmental dysfunction, Senator Kennedy stands out by demonstrating that he doesn’t take taxpayer dollars for granted. We are proud to select him as our Taxpayer Defender of the Month,” NTU Executive Vice President Brandon Arnold said.

The Taxpayer Defender award honors leaders who go above and beyond to protect taxpayers through transparency, fiscal discipline, and principled leadership.

Each month, NTU selects one leader who demonstrates a clear, consistent commitment to limiting taxes, spending, and regulation at every level of government. Previous award winners include House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
