The Honorable Craig Goldman
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Representative Goldman,
On behalf of National Taxpayers Union, the nation’s oldest taxpayer advocacy organization, I write to express our strong support for your legislation, H.R. 4758, the Homeowner Energy Freedom Act. This legislation is a welcome corrective to the costly and heavy-handed mandates from the misguided Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). NTU is proud to endorse H.R. 4758 and encourages all members to cosponsor this important pro-taxpayer legislation.
As you know, the Inflation Reduction Act stands as one of the most damaging laws ever enacted. Rather than delivering relief to families, it distorts energy markets, fuels runaway spending, and hands Washington greater control over the daily choices of consumers. Its provisions have already far outstripped initial cost estimates, while making America’s electricity supply less secure and less reliable.
That’s why enactment of the Homeowner Energy Freedom Act is so critical. By repealing three costly provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act, it pushes back against Washington’s attempt to tilt the marketplace against consumers and drive up household costs. These provisions include $5.7 billion in wasteful spending on appliance rebates, workforce training programs, and federal incentives for states to adopt stringent energy efficiency building codes—initiatives that come with significant hidden costs. In fact, estimates indicate that building codes requirements could add more than $20,000 to the price of a new home.
For homeowners and renters, the result of the IRA is higher housing prices, more expensive appliances, and fewer affordable options. The Homeowner Energy Freedom Act restores balance by protecting affordability and preserving consumer freedom. At the same time, it saves billions in taxpayer dollars that can be used for deficit reduction instead of being wasted on Green New Deal-style programs.
Instead of empowering families to make their own choices, the IRA uses regulation and federal incentives to dictate behavior. The Homeowner Energy Freedom Act is another important step toward completely eliminating the IRA and preserving consumer autonomy. NTU is proud to support this legislation and looks forward to working with you to help it become law.
Sincerely,
Thomas Aiello
