Floridians seeking property tax reform should look to the west

Property tax reform is the top issue for Florida legislators right now. For most of this year, Gov. Ron DeSantis has pushed for a complete abolition of property taxes in the state, but, even to ardent taxpayer advocates, this is clearly unworkable. Abolishing the property tax would cost the state $60 billion in annual revenue, and the governor’s office has not yet released a plan for how to replace the property tax. Luckily, several state lawmakers, led by Rep. Toby Overdorf, R-Palm City, are working on alternative reforms.
