An Inconvenient Tax

Tired of reading white papers and issue briefs?  Why not pop some popcorn, sit back and relax, while watching this top-notch film?  The Moving Picture Institute is slated to release a new documentary this April 15th.  It is particularly timely that this film, An Inconvenient Tax, will discuss the need for tax reform on Tax Day.  This film has the potential to create a grassroots movement to demand much-needed reform of our broken tax code.

An Inconvenient Tax reveals how Congress uses our extremely complex tax code to achieve political goals, some which are unrelated to raising revenue.  This 82 minute film features economic experts, commentators, and political voices among others.  It traces the evolution of the income tax through wars, economic booms and busts, and presidencies.  Not only does it explore the history of the tax code, but it presents several viable options for reform.

We, at the National Taxpayers Union, have worked hard on fundamental tax reform over the years.  Since 1999, NTU has conducted comprehensive examinations of Tax Code complexity, providing historical trends of the burden on Americans to comply with IRS demands.  Check out last year’s version here.  The study found that taxpayers using any of the 1040 tax forms spend an average of 26.4 hours and $209 completing their returns.  Total compliance costs reached about $300 billion!  An Inconvenient Tax compliments the work we’ve been doing and provides the content in a new format.
