Transparency Bill Would Ensure Government Spending Is Reported in a Timely Manner

April 6, 2026

The Honorable Josh Brecheen
351 Cannon House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative Brecheen,

On behalf of National Taxpayers Union, the nation’s oldest taxpayer advocacy organization, I write to express our support for the Expedited Transparency Act. This bipartisan legislation promotes accountability for taxpayers by ensuring that information on federal spending is made publicly available in a timely and consistent manner.

The country’s fiscal situation remains untenable. The national debt now exceeds $39 trillion, and interest payments alone already consume about 13% of the entire U.S. federal budget. It’s more important than ever for lawmakers to exercise judicious oversight of how taxpayer dollars are spent. Yet, the dramatic increase in the size and scope of government in recent decades makes it difficult to keep up with how federal agencies actually manage their allotted funding.

Under current law, federal agencies are required to report information about their expenditures to an official federal government website, USASpending.gov. However, in practice, these disclosures are often delayed by weeks or months, and sometimes government agencies fail to report anything at all. This lag undermines accountability for voters and watchdogs who are left unable to scrutinize federal spending in real time.

Transparency is a key component of restraining government profligacy. That’s why the Expedited Transparency Act is such a powerful tool for promoting fiscal responsibility. By mandating that all expenditures by government agencies be made public within three business days, this legislation equips the public with the information needed to hold elected officials accountable.

At its core, this legislation is about ensuring that government remains accountable to the taxpayer. NTU is proud to support the Expedited Transparency Act and looks forward to working with you to help it become law.

Sincerely,
