Taxpayers Congratulate IRS Commissioner Billy Long

National Taxpayers Union (NTU) President Pete Sepp on Thursday offered congratulations to newly confirmed IRS Commissioner Billy Long and outlined urgent policy priorities that are needed to help rebuild public trust and modernize the bureau.

“As the ‘Voice of America’s Taxpayers,’ we offer congratulations to Commissioner Long. His work will be challenging, but we are pleased to offer our support to his essential mission of improving the Internal Revenue Service and making it work better for taxpayers.

“We encourage Commissioner Long to act swiftly to restore public trust and modernize the IRS so Americans no longer have to spend over 7 billion hours each year just to comply with the law.

“He should deliver a real technology modernization plan with measurable milestones, protect taxpayer rights by ensuring the Office of Appeals is truly independent, and let Congress, not the IRS, decide the future of programs like Direct File.

“Commissioner Long must also shift away from counterproductive litigation tactics and embrace transparency, especially in fast-moving areas like cryptocurrency.

“This is the moment to reaffirm the integrity of our voluntary tax system and deliver the clarity, fairness, and accountability taxpayers deserve. All of us at National Taxpayers Union look forward to supporting the reforms the IRS under Commissioner Long’s leadership will need to undertake in the crucial days ahead.”
