A coalition of 17 taxpayer, free-market, and limited-government organizations on Friday sent a letter to Congress urging lawmakers to advance a second budget reconciliation bill aimed directly at reducing the $38 trillion national debt.
The letter argues that, while last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) delivered significant tax relief and cut more than $1 trillion in unproductive federal spending, federal debt continues to climb, surpassing the nation’s gross domestic product for the first time since World War II.
Sustained fiscal reform must now be Congress’s top legislative priority.
“Reconciliation remains the most effective tool available to rein in unproductive spending, reform outdated programs, and build on the progress already made,” Brandon Arnold, Executive Vice President of National Taxpayers Union, said. “Last summer’s tax relief proved Congress can act decisively, now the next step is making sure those gains aren’t erased by runaway spending that keeps adding debt and hurting affordability for Americans.”
The coalition calls on lawmakers to build on recent reforms by pursuing additional cost-saving policies left out of OBBBA, such as implementing structural changes to federal compensation and benefit systems, eliminating remaining wasteful subsidies, and codifying executive actions that reduce bureaucratic inefficiency.
The letter also emphasizes reforms to mandatory spending programs and improper payments across federal agencies as key areas for action.
“With federal spending still running above prior-year levels and debt continuing to rise, there is a narrow but critical window to restore fiscal discipline,” according to the letter.
In addition to National Taxpayers Union, the letter was signed 60 Plus Association, American Association of Senior Citizens, California Policy Center, Christian Employers Alliance, Center for a Free Economy, Consumer Action for a Strong Economy, Heartland Institute, Heartland Impact, Independent Women’s Voice, Job Creators Network, Ladies of Liberty Alliance, Palmetto Promise Institute, Pelican Institute for Public Policy, RI Center for Freedom and Prosperity, Rio Grande Foundation, and Southwest Public Policy Institute.
National Taxpayers Union is the only free-market organization for taxpayers that unites effective advocacy with useful research about how to limit taxes, spending, and regulation at every level and branch of government—state, federal, administrative, and judicial.
