Representative Smucker Named Taxpayer Defender of the Month by National Taxpayers Union

National Taxpayers Union (NTU) on Tuesday named U.S. Representative Lloyd Smucker (R-PA) Taxpayer Defender of the Month for his work on solutions to reduce the national debt.

Rep. Smucker’s Debt Solution and Accountability Act would establish reporting requirements for the Department of the Treasury whenever the federal government approaches the debt ceiling.

“The national debt is the greatest internal threat to our country. Tackling our national debt must be a priority to ensure our nation’s long-term economic prosperity,” Rep. Smucker said.

This bill requires the Treasury to submit a report to Congress one month before the expiration of a debt limit suspension or when the national debt reaches 99.5% of the debt ceiling. Each report must include the size of the national debt, its main causes, and plans to reduce the debt.

Rep. Smucker also recently introduced the Debt-to-GDP Transparency and Stabilization Act, which would require all executive and congressional budget resolutions to include the ratio of the national debt to gross domestic product.

“Taxpayers in Pennsylvania and across America appreciate Rep. Smucker’s work to reduce the national debt,” NTU Executive Vice President Brandon Arnold said. “As a nation, we have to do something about the $38 trillion national debt. We’re proud to present this award to recognize Rep. Smucker’s work to increase transparency around federal spending.”

The Taxpayer Defender award honors leaders who go above and beyond to protect taxpayers through transparency, fiscal discipline, and principled leadership.

Each month, NTU selects one leader who demonstrates a clear, consistent commitment to limiting taxes, spending, and regulation at every level of government. Previous award winners include House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Anyone can nominate a Taxpayer Defender of the Month on the National Taxpayers Union website.

National Taxpayers Union is the only free-market organization for taxpayers that unites effective advocacy with useful research about how to limit taxes, spending, and regulation at every level and branch of government—state, federal, administrative, and judicial.
