NTU Statement on the Violence of January 6

NTU is blessed to have many many friends - lawmakers, staff, and journalists - who work in the U.S. Capitol Complex. In spite of an outrageous and unlawful intrusion into the Complex, U.S. lawmakers stayed late into the night to ensure that the electoral process that has endured for 245 years and occurred during the Civil War and two World Wars was completed.

Americans have, through persistent lobbying, non-violent protests, and skillful organizing of their fellow citizens, won pro-taxpayer victories ranging from IRS reforms to state tax limitations.  They have also known defeats, respected the outcomes, absorbed the lessons, and gone on to fight and win again. NTU has accepted and embraced these experiences as part of America’s vibrant public square. So have far greater pro-taxpayer leaders, from Ronald Reagan to Howard Jarvis, as well as others who did not share all our views but with whom we forged cordial, productive alliances.

We thank the brave men and women of the Capitol Complex for representing the voices of peaceful Americans across the country. NTU has been a voice on Capitol Hill for more than fifty years, and the violence, property damage, and trespassing seen yesterday are unacceptable. All Americans must be committed to the peaceful democratic and legislative process.
