Congress Should Increase Economic Growth, Not Tax Rates

National Taxpayers Union Executive Vice President Brandon Arnold on Thursday released the following statement addressing persistent suggestions from Congress and the White House to raise taxes on high-earning individuals and businesses as part of the “One Big Beautiful Bill”:

“National Taxpayers Union is extremely pleased to see tax legislation moving in the House of Representatives next week. The reconciliation process represents a historic opportunity to not only prevent a massive tax hike, but also to promote economic growth, protect the rights of taxpayers, and restore fiscal responsibility.

With these goals in mind—particularly the importance of stimulating economic growth at a time of increasing uncertainty—we strongly urge lawmakers to avoid raising taxes on workers, families, and businesses. A higher tax rate on top earners and small businesses would undermine growth and job creation for all Americans.

While tackling our nation’s debt crisis is a critical goal, it should be achieved primarily through spending reductions and pro-growth policies, not tax hikes. Spending has spiraled out of control since the pandemic and must be contained if we are ever going to approach a balanced budget once again.”
