Carbon Tax Proposal Would Be Huge Tax Hike

Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) today unveiled a proposal that would create a carbon tax, eliminate the federal gas tax, and limit some of the Environmental Protection Agency's regulatory authority. Overall, the proposal would amount to a large tax increase on American families.

NTU Executive Vice President Brandon Arnold stated, "Congressman Curbelo's legislation would increase taxes by an estimated $874 to $946 billion over a ten-year window -- that's a huge burden on American families and businesses. Disappointingly, instead of using this revenue for pro-growth tax relief, the bill unwisely spends approximately 90 percent of these funds on government programs. Whatever progress this bill could have made in reducing the tax and regulatory overreach of the federal government is more than offset by new encroachments on our economy. As every advocate for taxpayers should understand, increased taxes and spending limit economic opportunity for those who need it most."

"Our economy is strong because of successful efforts by President Trump and Members of Congress -- including Congressman Curbelo -- to lower taxes and pare back unnecessary regulations. Curbelo should continue to follow this same roadmap toward prosperity rather than charting a course toward higher taxes."
