On behalf of the 362,000 members of the National Taxpayers Union (NTU), I write to offer our support for H.R. 5029, your Economic Freedom Act. This legislation would provide a comprehensive, lasting amount of relief to American taxpayers while allowing the private sector to create robust levels of economic growth. More specifically, H.R. 5029 would do the following:
• Eliminate the capital gains tax.
• Reduce the corporate tax rate to 12.5 percent.
• Eliminate the death tax permanently.
• Provide immediate business expensing.
• Reduce the payroll tax by half for 2010.
• Repeal the remaining wasteful spending contained in the so-called "stimulus" plan (except for the unemployment benefits and the tax cuts).
• Terminate the Troubled Asset Relief Program.
Immediate tax relief for American families and businesses is the best way to jump-start the economy. You've made clear your understanding of this concept by introducing legislation that will offer needed tax relief. If we reduce the tax burden on individuals and institutions now, we will ensure long-term economic prosperity down the road.
We commend your efforts and pledge to work with you on this very important package to make certain it becomes law. Any roll call votes on H.R. 5029 will be significantly weighted in NTU's annual Rating of Congress.
