NTU Implores Senate to Pass Obamacare Reconciliation Package

NTU urges all Senators to vote “YES” on the motion to proceed on H.R. 1628, the “Obamacare Repeal Reconciliation Act of 2017.” This legislation will dismantle many components of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, providing urgent relief to taxpayers and consumers.

H.R. 1628 takes an important step toward repealing Obamacare by eliminating most of the law’s fiscal components. If passed, Congress will still face the task of repealing many onerous Obamacare regulations and establishing policies that allow for a market-based, consumer-oriented health care system. Still, passage of this legislation is essential to enacting more comprehensive reforms.

NTU is particularly pleased that H.R. 1628 repeals Obamacare’s taxes, which have raised the cost of health care, reduced consumer options, stagnated economic growth, and increased the size of the federal government. These harmful taxes, such as the individual mandate, the Cadillac tax, the medical device tax, the health insurance tax, and many more have cost the economy approximately $1.2 trillion.

While NTU understands that this is not the final solution to ensuring greater access to care at a lower cost, it is a necessary step towards the repeal and replacement of this law. NTU strongly urges the passage of this bill to provide immediate relief for taxpayers, followed by additional legislation that emphasizes free market health care reform. Republican Senators have long stated the need to repeal and replace Obamacare; this legislation is critical for implementing more sustainable, affordable, and truly patient-centered reforms.

The vote on the motion to proceed on H.R. 1628 will be significantly weighted in our annual Rating of Congress and a “YES” vote will be considered the pro-taxpayer position.
