In a recent article in The Hill, Dr. Edward Peter Stringham, a professor at Trinity College, makes the case that government grants are being used to peddle certain pre-ordained politically-favored causes. Dr. Stringham uses recent studies on the alleged negative impacts of alcohol as an example.
Unfortunately for taxpayers, misuse of government grants seems all too common. Earlier this year, National Taxpayers Union we wrote a letter to the National Institutes of Health asking questions about a government grant originally earmarked for AIDs research that eventually funded an anti-alcohol screed.
Funding was given to NIH for HIV research and prevention. Instead, the funding was used to examine the effects of alcohol excise taxes. You see where the conflict lies.
