NTU Announces Digital Advertisement Opposing Wasteful Spending on Investigating Tech

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) released “Do Your Job” – a digital advertisement that opposes wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars on investigating American tech companies. Amid ongoing congressional scrutiny and an impending House Antitrust Subcommittee hearing with tech CEOs, NTU released the ad to remind lawmakers that it is more important than ever to be mindful of how our tax dollars are spent.

“The upcoming Antitrust Subcommittee hearing and ongoing investigation into tech exemplifies so much of what is wrong with Washington,” said Pete Sepp, President of NTU. “With millions unemployed, a spike in COVID-19 cases around the country, and our healthcare system being pushed to its limits, Congress should focus on solving the problems that the American people care about most. This hearing does nothing to address the serious economic, public health, and fiscal issues our country faces and is political grandstanding at its worst. Now is definitely not the time for Congress to try and score political points by attacking American businesses; instead, it should be prioritizing a response to the ongoing pandemic and our country’s economic woes.”

“Congress’s misplaced priorities amount to an enormous waste of taxpayer dollars and legislative resources,” Sepp continued. “The money and time spent on this frivolous investigation into tech would be put to better use if it were instead directed towards meeting the urgent and demanding challenges that our country now faces. Congress must stop putting taxpayers on the hook for fishing expeditions such as these.”

Despite ongoing investigations into tech by policymakers at various levels of the government, a recent NTU poll conducted by Fabrizio, Lee & Associates found that voters overwhelmingly agreed that these investigations are a waste of both time and taxpayer dollars. For more than 25 years, NTU has sided with taxpayers and cautioned lawmakers against heavy-handed antitrust policies that adversely impact our economy.
