“YES” on H.R. 2146, the Digital Accountability and Transparency (DATA) Act.
April 25, 2012
NTU urges all Representatives to vote “YES” on H.R. 2146, the Digital Accountability and Transparency (DATA) Act. Introduced by Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA), this legislation would take an important step toward greater accountability to taxpayers by providing more information on how their hard-earned dollars are spent.
Through the creation of the Federal Accountability Portal, the DATA Act builds on the good work of USASpending.gov by consolidating and standardizing government spending data down to each person, state, local or tribal government, as well as any government corporations that have received appropriated funds down through the subgrant and subcontractor tiers. This information would be made available online to the public. The Federal Accounting and Spending Transparency Board established by this bill would also be tasked with auditing how federal funds are spent, to ensure a competitive process is maintained.
With federal spending out of control and new reports of misuse of taxpayer funds surfacing on a regular basis, the DATA Act brings increased transparency to a system that is often rife with favoritism, waste, and fraud. As the federal government continues to make heavy demands on the public’s paychecks, taxpayers deserve the opportunity to find out more details about where the money they send to Washington is being spent.
A “YES” vote on H.R. 2146 will be considered the pro-taxpayer vote for our annual Rating of Congress.
