YES on S. 953, the “Offshore Production and Safety Act.”
May 18, 2011
NTU urges all Senators to vote “YES” on S. 953, the “Offshore Production and Safety Act.” Sponsored by Sen. McConnell (R-KY), this bill would help put an end to calculated government inaction and bureaucratic obstructionism in order to create jobs, lower energy costs, and boost our economy.
Although it has been more than six months since the Obama Administration’s moratorium on offshore drilling ended, bureaucratic obstinacy has left the approval process for leases at a standstill. This implicit “permitorium” has forced rigs to leave our waters, energy exploration to slow, and investment to flow to other countries.
By setting reasonable time limits on the review and action on drilling permits, S. 953 will loosen the government’s stranglehold on offshore oil and natural gas deposits, allowing us to work toward safe, responsible, and efficient domestic energy production. Furthermore, this legislation will reverse the Obama Administration’s unjust delay of lease sales of the coast of Virginia and the Gulf of Mexico which have needlessly prevented energy exploration, dampened job creation, and slowed economic growth. While more action is needed, this legislation is a step in the right direction towards increased exploration for American energy.
Roll call votes on S. 953 will be significantly weighted in our annual Rating of Congress and a “YES” vote will be considered the pro-taxpayer position.
