NTU urges all Representatives to vote “YES” on H.R. 6082

July 25, 2012

NTU urges all Representatives to vote “YES” on H.R. 6082, the Congressional Replacement of President Obama’s Energy-Restricting and Job-Limiting Offshore Drilling Plan. Congress will open the door to new jobs and increased energy production by pursuing the path contained in this legislation.

While President Obama has touted his “all of the above” energy plan, his Proposed Final Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program strategy reads more like “anything but fossil fuels.” Despite the fact that traditional fuels are currently our most reliable and affordable sources of energy, the new five-year plan for energy exploration of the Outer Continental Shelf opens up no new areas for leasing, keeping the Atlantic coast, Pacific coast, and most water off Alaska off-limits. Only 15 lease sales confined to the Gulf of Mexico and a small area off Alaska are permitted. According to the Congressional Research Service, this is the lowest number ever included in an offshore leasing plan.

In contrast, H.R. 6082 includes 29 new off-shore leases for energy exploration, specifically targeted to additional regions with known resources. As Americans worry about future pain at the pump and oil imports are often tested by political unrest, now is not the time to limit our energy potential. The additional leases in H.R. 6082 will mean new jobs and an increase in oil and gas supplies that could help to stabilize or bring down energy prices. The prospect of higher energy costs remains a serious threat to  taxpayer wallets and the economy, affecting everything from transportation to food prices.

So far, the Administration’s emphasis on “green” energy and punitive regulations on our fossil fuel resources has cost taxpayers billions of dollars through risky loans and led to alarming job loss, especially in the coal industry. We need to pursue a true “all of the above” policy that ensures real growth across all energy sectors, not just a favored few.

All roll call votes on H.R. 6082 will be included in our annual Rating of Congress.
