YES on H.R. 910, the Energy Tax Prevention Act of 2011
April 6, 2011
NTU urges all Representatives to vote “YES” on H.R. 910, the “Energy Tax Prevention Act of 2011.” Introduced by Representative Upton (R-MI), this bill would prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from implementing an economically damaging regime of greenhouse gas regulations under the auspices of the Clean Air Act.
Following the defeat of “cap-and-trade” in the Senate, the EPA circumvented the legislative process and began to implement heavy-handed regulations on climate change. By its own estimates, the EPA’s self-proclaimed authority to regulate greenhouse gases will cost industrial facilities $46,000 and commercial or multi-family residencies $5,000 on average for permits. These overly-strict emissions requirements and permitting procedures would lead to enormous regulatory costs for business owners, hit consumers with a de facto tax hike, and would pose a substantial threat to job growth.
To prevent this blatant power grab, H.R. 910 applies the simple solution of reestablishing Congress’ jurisdiction over climate policies, thereby vesting power in the taxpayers through their elected representative rather than the unaccountable bureaucrats at the EPA.
Roll call votes on H.R. 910 will be heavily weighted in our annual Rating of Congress and a “YES” vote will be considered the pro-taxpayer position.
