NTU urges all Representatives to vote “YES” on the Republican Study Committee’s (RSC’s) amendment to H.R. 2017, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Appropriations Act.
June 1, 2011
This amendment would reduce spending by $5.1 billion compared with current funding amounts in order to reflect FY 2008 levels.
H.R. 2017 provides $40.6 billion in total non-emergency funding for DHS, a decrease of $1.1 billion from last year’s level and $3 billion below the President’s request. While the real reductions in year-over-year spending contained in the bill are laudable, greater fiscal discipline is required to return the grossly-inflated baselines for appropriations bills to their historical norms and begin the necessary process of squaring outlays with receipts.
The RSC amendment strikes a better balance between funding the critical measures to keep our nation safe, and acknowledging the very real security threat posed by the federal government’s unprecedented debt and deficits. For that reason, roll call votes on the RSC amendment will be significantly weighted in our annual Rating of Congress and a “YES” vote will be considered the pro-taxpayer position. If you have any questions, please contact NTU Federal Government Affairs Manager Brandon Greife at (703) 683-5700
