“YES” on H.R. 2560, the “Cut, Cap, and Balance Act.”
July 19, 2011
NTU urges all Representatives to vote “YES” on H.R. 2560, the “Cut, Cap, and Balance Act.” Sponsored by Reps. Chaffetz (R-UT), Mulvaney (R-SC) and Ribble (WI) this bill is the comprehensive solution necessary to place federal spending on a more sustainable course and pave the way for economic growth.
In recent years, Washington, under the direction of Presidents and Congressional leaders from both parties, has continually failed to make needed adjustments to its spending habits. Such intransigence has led to an explosion in federal spending that has pushed America to the brink of a painful crisis. The debt ceiling presents a monumental opportunity for our representatives to demonstrate the leadership required to not only avert a near-term breakdown, but to successfully navigate the long-term fiscal challenges.
The Cut, Cap, and Balance Act fully embraces the occasion, in turn answering to millions of taxpayers who rightly understand that overspending, not undertaxing, is the source of present and future problems with the federal ledger. H.R. 2560 combines $111 billion in cuts to non-security discretionary spending in the FY2012 budget, statutory caps that gradually reduce expenditures nearer to historic norms, and a $2.4 trillion increase in the debt ceiling that would only go into effect if Congress passes and submits a Balanced Budget Amendment to the states for ratification.
These structural changes provide the necessary framework to put America back on sound fiscal footing and create the conditions for prosperity. Roll call votes on the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act will be among the most heavily weighted of the year in our annual Rating of Congress.
