Vote YES on the King Amendment #273 to HR 1
February 18, 2011
NTU urges all Representatives to vote “YES” on Amendment #273 to the Continuing Resolution, H.R. 1. Introduced by Representative Steve King (R-IA), this amendment would effectively eliminate the “Davis-Bacon” prevailing wage requirement for projects funded in the bill.
The Davis-Bacon Act contains on outdated and bureaucratic provision that requires the federal government to pay “prevailing wages” on public works projects. On average, taxpayers are forced to pay wages that are 22 percent higher than market rates. The result, according to the Heritage Foundation, is nearly $11 billion worth of additional costs this year alone and fewer job opportunities on each project. With Congress’ $1.6 trillion overspending problem this year and a $14 trillion national debt, taxpayers simply cannot afford to pay inflated wages for public projects any longer.
Roll call votes on the King Amendment (#273) will be significantly weighted in our annual Rating of Congress and a “YES” vote will be considered the pro-taxpayer position.
