A few of our significant accomplishments:

  • Income tax indexing, so inflation no longer bumps taxpayers into higher brackets
  • Landmark "Taxpayer Bill of Rights" laws that help to safeguard against IRS abuses
  • Bringing the Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution within one vote of passing the Congress
  • Reform of taxpayer-funded Congressional mailing system, and public mailing cost disclosure by each member of Congress
  • Repeal of the Catastrophic Surtax on senior citizens
  • Dozens of successful state and local tax limitation movements -- activists have defeated 90% of the 50 major tax increases that appeared on state ballots over the past five years

NTU, pro-taxpayer legislators, and other organizations allied with us have:

  • WON anti-inflation indexing of the federal personal income tax. Now, a cost of living raise no longer pushes you into a higher tax bracket.
  • BROUGHT the Balanced Budget Amendment closer than ever to victory in Congress. In 1995, the Amendment passed the House of Representatives for the first time in history.
  • FOUGHT to preserve the tax relief contained in the recently enacted law to balance the budget by 2002. NTU is now recognized as leading the fight for much deeper tax cuts in 1998, as well as total overhaul of the tax system itself.
  • STOPPED budget-busting schemes in Congress for a government takeover of your health care and informed taxpayers about pro-taxpayer health reforms like Medical Savings Accounts. Our "Trojan Horse Tour" received widespread attention.
  • WON passage of two "Taxpayer Bill of Rights" packages which safeguard against IRS abuses. Recently an NTU representative served with the National Commission on Restructuring the IRS. Congress is poised to enact the Commission's sweeping recommendations.
  • WON cuts in federal income tax rates for ALL taxpayers. The top income tax rate was reduced from 70 percent to about 36 percent.
  • WON reforms of the Congressional tax-funded mailing privilege and forced public disclosure of mailing costs by each member of Congress.
  • WON reforms reducing the costs of federal employee pension systems.
  • SMASHED federal research boondoggles like the Superconducting Super Collider, the Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor, and the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor, for a combined taxpayer savings of well over $10 billion.
  • WON legislation to shut down unneeded military bases; total savings to taxpayers so far--$57 billion.
  • STOPPED repeated attempts by Congress to write off more than $10,000,000,000 of unrecovered costs for the federal government's uranium enrichment program.
  • WON efforts to oust M. Danny Wall, head of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board and the man who may have cost the taxpayers more than any other bureaucrat in history for his role in the Savings and Loan crisis.
  • DEFEATED 90% of the 50 major tax increases that appeared on state ballots over the past five years.
  • WON support by 29 state legislatures that have passed resolutions demanding action by Congress on a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
  • WON passage of the Madison Amendment that requires a House election to occur before any new pay raise law takes effect.
  • WON constitutional limits on taxes and spending. Legislative super-majority votes or votes of the people to raise taxes are now required in nearly a dozen states. Other constitutional amendments or restrictions limiting taxes or spending are now law in over a dozen other states.
  • WON passage of a statute granting line-item veto power to the President. NTU is currently working on a constitutional amendment to strengthen the law and make it permanent.
  • STOPPED plans in Congress to expose taxpayers to multibillion-dollar bailouts of disaster insurance companies.
  • NTU was featured in over 3,000 print and 300 electronic media outlets last year. The Right Guide's most recent survey of hundreds of interest groups found that NTU was number one among taxpayer organizations for media coverage. NTU was also named by the respected Washington Monthly as one of the top five interest groups out of thousands in the nation.
