Where is Al Gore's Lock Box?

March 25, 2010

Where is Al Gore's Lock Box when Social Security needs it most?  Remember the Lock Box?

  • "I will keep [Social Security] in a lockbox. The interest savings, I would put right back into it. That extends the life for 55 years. I am opposed to a plan that diverts 1 out of every 6 dollars away from the Trust Fund. It would go bankrupt within this generation."
  • "Putting both Social Security and Medicare in an iron-clad lock box where the politicians can't touch them -- to me, that kind of common sense is a family value."

I ask this question because the New York Times just happens to report today that Social Security will pay more in benefits this year than it receives.  Apparently, this might be a problem:

The long-term costs of Social Security present further problems for politicians, who are already struggling over how to reduce the nation's debt. The national predicament echoes that of many European governments, which are facing market pressure to re-examine their commitments to generous pensions over extended retirements.

Thank goodness no one would think to pass a massive entitlement expansion at a time like this.

Johnson was responsible for the SS lock box, Gore just talked about it.http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2576842/posts http://www.heralddemocrat.com/hd/Letter-to-ed---Elkins--J---8-23-10 The so called "Social Security's lock box" was robbed in 1962 by President Lyndon B. Johnson and his administration. (I was there)

The Democrats had total control the Senate and the House 2006-2010. Democrats control of Senate 2011 - present..... Unemployment 2007 = 4.6% 2010 = 9.6%

JoDieann, you're about a nearsighted as they come in the Republicants party. Bush's handling of the economy has been a total disaster and now he puts out a book which should have been called "Delusion Points" Whatever you may think of Clinton/Gore or Obama/Pelosi, compare the record of Bush I and Bush II and see how dismal our economy was during their reign. Republicants are good at confusing the american public with things like God, guns and promises of "low taxes". Deregulation (as promoted by the right) may be good in some cases, but we see how too much of it can wreck havoc in our economy. Businesses are beholden to their shareholders and not to the greater public good. Government is there to make sure that the two goals balance each other. If you systematically dismantle government oversight, you end up with the economic disaster at the end of Bush I. Congressional salary increases may be annoying, but they account for a minute fraction of the federal budget. Don't be myopic!

I AM SO CONCERNED WITH THE POLITICIANS WHO ARE WORKING IN THE NATIONAL DEBT, HEALTH CARE,STIMULUS PACKAGE, MY HEART GOES OUT TO THEM!!! WHAT A JOKE! THEY ARE WORKING FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR LOBBYIST!!! POINT BEING THEY CAN GIVE THEMSELVES A 3.25% INCREASE IN SALARY, BUT DENY A COLA INCREASE TO THOSE OF US WHO'S COST OF LIVING HAS DOUBLED SINCE OBAMA/PELOSI HAS TAKEN OVER. WHAT INCREASE WILL THEY GIVE THEMSELVES IN 2011? WE NEED/WANT THE SAME INCREASE THEY RECEIVE AND WHY NOT????

Newt FORCED Clinton to balance the budget, even threatening to shut down the governemnt if Bill didn't sign the budget presented to him (after Bill had already rejected 5 budgets). "Clinton balanced the budget" is another myth completely contrary to reality that libs like to toss around.

Clinton and Gore balanced the budget because of a Republican congress. If you would read the Constitution, you would realize that spending originates in the House of Representatives. Bill Clinton was forced back to centrist policies because he was not allowed to sign bills of increased spending because Congress did not give him the opportunity. The lock box was another of the ingeniously deceptive ideas of Gore- I guess like the internet and global warming, he invented the idea.

What a better place our country and the world would be if Junior George had never been inflicted on us. Clinton/Gore balanced the budget and left America secure. Bush/Cheney/Rove inflicted damage that will take us DECADES to recover from. Don't blame Obama - these are Bush deficits and heathcare reform lowers costs...

FYI: VP Al Gore has been OUT OF OFFICE for the last 10 years! His lock box idea was done away with by the SCOTUS when they gave Dubya the Presidency or didn't you know that? Stop blaming the Clinton administration for all the mess Dubya got us into and left Obama to clean up.

Blame global warming. I'm sure the lock box just melted away along with all the money it was supposed to contain.
