Florida SCORECARD

Florida has long been an attractive state to reside in whether you are a retiring or just beginning to raise a family. If you think this is all because of the warm climate and nice beaches, look no further than California, which is hemorrhaging population despite an abundance of sunshine and coastline. Florida attracted more domestic migration than any other state in the country between 1997 and 2007 for one overarching reason – a favorable tax climate. It is one of seven states that levies no personal income tax, favorable not only to individuals, but to the small businesses that file business revenue as personal income. The Sunshine State does not engage in double taxation via a statewide death tax, either. However, there is work to be done on the spending side avoiding the types of multi-billion dollar tax increases signed by Gov. Crist in 2009 in order to sustain Florida’s competitive edge nationally.
