As the vote on potential elimination of Missouri’s income tax approaches this Tuesday, many of the attacks on Amendment 5 have been contrived at best — and downright wrong at worst.
But for some Missourians, there is real concern that a significant income tax cut can’t be done responsibly. After all, they might say, look at what happened to Kansas. And while being confused for Kansas may be a familiar problem for Kansas City, Missourians need not fear the Kansas boogeyman. Done right, eliminating the state income tax can set Missouri up for future prosperity.
Ever since the Kansas tax cuts went wrong back starting in 2012, proponents of higher taxes have trotted them back out as proof that tax cuts will cause budgetary catastrophe each time a new state tax cut is proposed. Yet let us take a break from flogging this poor, desiccated horse corpse, because Kansas is the exception that proves the rule.
