NTU urges all Representatives to vote “NO” on H.J.Res. 45, which would increase the national debt limit by $1.9 trillion. Congress has ramped up spending at an appalling rate, and approval of this resolution will only pile more onto the crushing burdens borne by Americans now and in the future.
The premise is simple: the more we spend, the more we must borrow. Increasing the federal government’s credit limit, rather than looking for ways to reduce the deficit and begin to pay down our debt, is not the means to restore fiscal restraint and public trust. In addition, the spending “restraint” structures in H.J.Res. 45 would exclude 45 percent of discretionary spending and could be waived whenever Congress designates a given expenditure as an ''emergency.''
Congress should begin the urgent task of tackling our national debt – not adding to it. Increasing that debt for a sixth time since 2007 is simply irresponsible.
Roll call votes on this resolution will be heavily weighted in our annual Rating of Congress.
