(Alexandria, Va.) -- Amid reports of processing delays in stimulus rebate checks, millions of Americans may be wondering whether they're getting a rebate after all. But thanks to a step-by-step guide from the 362,000-member National Taxpayers Union (NTU), taxpayers will be able to make sure they're eligible to get their money. NTU has released two tests -- a "short form" guide and a longer, more detailed version -- to help individuals and families figure out their net rebates.
"Taxpayers deserve to know how much of their own money the federal government is willing to give back -- and our guide is the place to find out," said Pete Sepp, NTU Vice President for Policy and Communications, who drafted the instructions. "The 'short form' will work for most, but not all, people who may be entitled to a rebate. Otherwise, our 'long form' should help those filers with more complicated income and tax situations."
The guide will help individuals determine whether they qualify and meet income requirements and, if so, the rebate amount to expect. The tests also include sections to factor in different levels of federal tax liability, joint filing for married couples, and child tax credits.
"Many tax filers will be waiting longer than they expected to receive their rebate checks, but they shouldn't be lulled into forgetting they have money coming or thinking they don't qualify," Sepp concluded. "Our rebate guide can give these folks some peace of mind."
NTU is a nonpartisan, nonprofit citizen organization founded in 1969 to work for lower taxes, smaller government, and economic freedom at all levels. Note: For the full guide or further information on NTU's taxpayer advocacy, visit www.ntu.org.
