(Alexandria, VA) – In response to the South Carolina State Senate’s passage of S277, a new tax on wireless consumers intended to prop up landline services, National Taxpayers Union (NTU) offered the following statement:
“We are disappointed that the South Carolina state Senate voted in favor of an unnecessary tax increase on wireless customers. If the Senate has its way, 4.5 million consumers in the state will see a new tax on their monthly phone bills to pay for a government program that is stuck in the past.
“With only a few weeks left to the legislative session, it is imperative that members of the House and Governor Haley stand up for hardworking taxpayers and reject S277. South Carolinians already pay over 16% if their monthly bill in taxes and fees – adding to this number is misguided and wrong.
“On behalf of the National Taxpayers Union and our members in the Palmetto State, we strongly urge the House and Governor Haley to stop this unwarranted legislation. Additionally, we call upon South Carolina taxpayers to make their voice heard by contacting their elected officials and asking them to reject the cell phone tax bill.”
