***This is the third of several communications to the Senate NTU intends to make during the course of the budget debate***
As the Senate considers S. Con. Res. 8, the Concurrent Resolution on the Budget for Fiscal Year 2014, NTU urges all Senators to vote as follows:
- “YES” on Sen. Sessions (R-AL) Points of Order Amendments: These two amendments would create points of order against legislation that either increases direct spending or increases the deficit in any of the four 10-year periods beginning after 2023. Waiving such a point of order would require the vote of 60 Senators. These amendments would create important taxpayer safeguards against budgetary gimmicks that hide the true cost of spending.
- “YES” on Sen. Lee (R-UT) Point of Order Amendment: This commonsense proposal would create a point of order against a budget that spends more on net interest payments than on national defense. Doing so would create a strong incentive for Congress to prioritize spending and balance the federal budget.
- “YES” on Sen. Sessions (R-AL) Motion to Recommit: This motion would send the budget back to committee with instructions to achieve balance within ten years.
- “YES” on Deficit Neutral Reserve Fund for School Choice: Introduced by Sen. Paul (R-KY) and Sen. Alexander (R-TN), this amendment would permit existing federal funding to follow low-income children to the school their parents have chosen for them to attend.
- “YES” on Sen. Paul (R-KY) Budget Substitute: This ambitious budget would achieve balance within five years, overhaul the burdensome Tax Code, eliminate unnecessary agencies, reform entitlement programs, and put the economy on a path toward real growth.
Roll call votes on the above amendments to S. Con. Res. 8 will be included in our annual Rating of Congress.
