Jon Coupal Joins National Taxpayers Union Board

(Alexandria, VA) – National Taxpayers Union (NTU) and National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF) are very pleased to announce that Jon Coupal has joined the organizations’ Boards of Directors.

Mr. Coupal is (and will remain) President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA), and Chairman of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Foundation; both organizations were founded by the leader of the California Tax Revolt that passed the landmark Proposition 13 in 1978. Coupal brings over three decades of experience working on tax issues and fighting for taxpayers to NTU’s board.

“Few, if any, taxpayer advocates have a proven record of leadership and results like Jon Coupal,” said NTU and NTUF President Pete Sepp. “Jon has argued on behalf of taxpayers in court and in the public square, always standing tall for limited government while standing up to special interests.”

“Californians have Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association to thank for many protections against predatory taxes and government spending,” Sepp continued. “In a state where taxpayers face many challenges, HJTA has shown overburdened citizens everywhere that they can still fight back and win.”

Jon Coupal has stewarded pro-taxpayer ballot initiatives through to successful passage numerous times, and seen them prevail in the California Supreme Court and U.S. Supreme Court. Furthermore, he has helped defeat tax hikes like 2009’s Proposition 1A – the record holder for the largest single state-level tax increase ever proposed.

Most important, he and his team have defended Proposition 13, the state’s vital property tax reform measure from numerous attempts to undermine it. Proposition 13 helped to inspire numerous movements across the country resulting in major tax limitation laws from Massachusetts to Michigan, Florida and Colorado.

“I look forward to working with NTU members and its outstanding leadership team on tax issues of national concern,” said Coupal. “The battles ahead over taxes and spending may well determine if our Country prospers or if we are to continue down the road to mediocrity or worse.”

HJTA and NTU have often joined forces in the cause of limited government, taking on issues such as increased parcel property taxes (Proposition 88, 2006) and fee hikes (Proposition 26, 2010).

Sepp concluded, “Jon has long been a friend and ally to NTU and our members. Now we look forward to calling him a colleague and working even more effectively to alleviate the dire burdens facing America’s taxpayers.”

National Taxpayers Union, “The Voice of America’s Taxpayers”, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working for lower taxes, smaller government, and economic freedom at all levels. More information on NTU’s work is available at www.ntu.org.

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers association is California’s largest taxpayer organization with over 250,000 members. It serves as the watchdog over taxpayers’ rights and Proposition 13, which limits property tax increases and sets vote standards that must be met to impose new or increased taxes.
