House Permabans Taxes on Internet Access – On to the Senate!

(Alexandria, VA) – This week, the House of Representatives passed the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act (PITFA), H.R. 235, earning cheers from National Taxpayers Union (NTU) and untold ‘likes’ from taxpayers across the country.  NTU Executive Vice President Brandon Arnold offered the following statement in light of this significant vote:

“Government should never increase the barrier to Internet access for Americans, and Congress’ commitment to limiting the tax and regulatory burden on the Internet has been a key reason we’ve seen so much growth in that sector over the past twenty years.

“Since 1998 Congress has barred state and local governments from imposing discriminatory taxes on Internet access.

“Yet, having to consistently renew the ban puts the measure at risk of being held hostage by other interests – like the Marketplace Fairness Act which attempts to knock down cross border taxpayer protections so states can collect their sales taxes anywhere in the country.

“Repeated short-term extensions also increase uncertainty in the marketplace for both consumers and providers.

“National Taxpayers Union’s members and anyone who relies on the Internet owe the House thanks for passing the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act.

“Now it’s time for the Senate to follow suit, by passing the House’s bill. Once that happens, taxpayers, consumers, and small business owners will celebrate an open Internet that’s free of predatory state and local taxes.

“They’ll also be able to rest easy, knowing that this sensible and proven policy won’t be manipulated by those who would counter its positive effects with bigger government burdens.”

National Taxpayers Union, “The Voice of America’s Taxpayers”, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working for lower taxes, smaller government, and economic freedom at all levels. More information on NTU’s work is available at www.ntu.org.
