Obama Promised Sunlight

President Obama, while on the campaign trail, promised "Sunlight Before Signing" meaning that he would post all bills he receives from Congress online for five days before he signs them.  We applaud his interest in greater transparency; however, he hasn't quite lived up to expectations.  So far in 2010, he has only fulfilled that promise about one fourth of the time.  (However it is an improvement from 2009.)

Check out this post by Jim Harper, Director of Information Policy Studies at the Cato Institute.  He compiled a table that summarizes the Sunlight Before Signing status of the 163 bills that President Obama has signed.  Of those bills, 113 have been held for five days but only 16 were actually posted on Whitehouse.gov before signing.  Overall, he has posted nearly 10 percent of the bills.  Not the 100 percent he promised.

It's about time for President Obama to keep his promise.
