Right now, President Obama is feeling the pressure from you, the taxpayer. Last week’s election wave sent a clear message that America has had enough of the left’s high tax-and-spend policies. As you know, voters approved a number of pro-taxpayer ballot measures and consistently opted for candidates who supported lower taxes, smaller government and less burdensome regulations. As a result, fiscal conservatives won several key Senate races, gained control of additional state legislatures and won the governor’s mansion in blue bastions like Maryland, Illinois, and Massachusetts.
But if the President and his friends at the EPA have their way with their proposed Clean Power Plan rule, we are going to see our power bills increase by up to 17 percent, according to a recent study by NERA Economic Consulting. In total, the study found that 43 states will face double-digit-plus electricity price hikes and the total cost to taxpayers and businesses would amount to a damaging $41 billion or more per year. All of this would occur because the proposed scheme aims to reduce carbon emissions for fossil-fuel-fired power plants throughout the country by a total of 30 percent by 2030. It’s a classic Washington, DC plot that’s out of touch with reality and forsakes the needs of individual states.
