Dear Senator Yoder:
On behalf of the members of the National Taxpayers Union (NTU), I would like to extend our enthusiastic support for Senate Bill 80, which would prevent the State of Indiana and local governments from taxing access to the Internet.
With the current federal moratorium on such taxes scheduled to expire on October 1, your legislation would provide much needed certainty to millions of Indiana residents and businesses that rely on the Internet for commerce, education, entertainment, and more
Since 1998, Congress has barred state and local governments from imposing new or discriminatory taxes on Internet access. This has helped to create a dynamic environment where the Internet is thriving and bringing advanced communication capabilities to hundreds of millions. Keeping the burden of new government-mandated access charges off Internet service has made entry to the Information Superhighway more affordable for Americans from all walks of life.
As Congress continues to debate this important issue, taxpayers face the threat of a potential onslaught of new predatory “fees” and taxes. Your bill would provide necessary safeguards that will help ensure that Indianans from across the economic spectrum have access to affordable Internet services.
Our members strongly urge all members of the legislature to support SB 80 and work toward its swift enactment.
