Latest Taxpayer's Tab: Mandatory Minimum Sentences

As NTUF continues to improve our new website and The Taxpayer's Tab, we've been posting the latest research from our ongoing BillTally project.

Last week we featured legislation from Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) - H.R. 5288, the National Care Corps Act - that would establish a new National Care Corps to provide caretaking services across the country. The Corps would function in a fashion similar to the AmeriCorps program, which offers benefits like tuition assistance, health insurance, and child care support in exchange for members' commitments to local community service organizations. H.R. 5288 would require $350 million in additional federal spending per year.

Also featured was H.R. 3382/S. 1410, the Smarter Sentencing Act of 2014. Congressman Raul Labrador (R-ID) and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced these bills in their respective chambers of Congress in order to reduce the mandatory minimum sentences given for nonviolent federal drug offenses. The shorter sentences could yield savings of about $75 million per year.
