Hawaii SCORECARD

Many consider Hawaii to be America's version of paradise; it would be nice if that label applied to its tax climate. Unfortunately, it does not. Hawaiians have to navigate a staggering 12 personal income tax brackets, including three just added in 2009. In that year, the Legislature also raised taxes on tourism, real estate transactions, and tobacco. While it is difficult for Hawaiians to "jump the border" to a more competitively taxed state, Hawaii's tax climate makes it less likely that a business will relocate and create jobs on the island chain. On behalf of our nearly 1,900 members in the Aloha State, NTU will continue to fight to reduce the size of state government and bring increased prosperity and growth. Be sure to check back often to our Hawaii page for information on state and local taxpayer groups, our work on behalf of taxpayers in the state, and contact information for your lawmakers.
