California SCORECARD

California is the best example of how to run a state’s economy into the ground. Years of overspending coupled with a highly progressive and unstable tax structure have left the Golden State nearly ungovernable. Rather than tackle spending restraint, lawmakers in Sacramento have relied on a perpetual stream of tax increases and accounting gimmicks to ostensibly balance the state budget while kicking the can down the road and ignoring real reforms. Because it is the country’s largest economy and it has a robust initiative and referendum climate, California is a land of opportunity for NTU’s 52,300 members in the state. Be sure to check back often to NTU's California page for information on state and local taxpayer groups, our work on behalf of taxpayers in the state, and contact information for your legislators.
